Whoo hoo! Finals are finally over!!! Please excuse me it's been a long
semester.
Hmmmn, I don't know. Personally I have a C600 and I consider myself a
tinkerer. I've been running 9.2.2 on it for about three or four months
already and there have been no problems whatsoever.
However, any version of OS 9.x.x is going to be a slow dog on the stock
processor. I just added a Sonnet 400 G3/L2 card to it and now it runs pretty
well, but still, the only reason I bothered to get the card is because I've
had this computer for so long. It was the very first computer that I bought
myself and so, has significant sentimental value to me. Even over my
Powerbook, I'd hock that in a minute to put towards one of those newer G4s
with DVI (if I could ever afford an Apple monitor). I've been trying to
convince myself to sell this thing for over a year to put some money into a
high-end G3 or a low- to mid-range G4. Still no go. This baby's not gonna
end up polluting some toxic salvage yard in China!
I don't know if getting any C-Series right now is such a great idea if you
want to run OS 9.x. The RAM limit alone is enough to make me rather get a
S900, not to mention PCI slots. And also, look at the upgrade options if
you're planning to keep this computer for a while. S900s are pretty cheap to
come by, as are Apple 7200s, 9500s, Beige G3s, and so on. All with better
upgrade options than a C-Series. You could even get a G4 card for about the
price of a G3/L2 of less performance. You're not gonna use them forever but
it's good to squeeze a little more life out of 'em if you can. Didn't Jobs
recently say that OS 9 was dead???
Sorry for such a long post but I figured I'd give my $0.02
But if you're a stubborn one like me, here's the link to the 6400 Zone. It
has all the info you'd ever want for upgrading a C-series computer. The C500
and C600 are based on the Apple 6400.

It used to be hosted by Apple but I guess they're going crazy with the
bandwidth limitations these days.
To install I started up off another partition with OS 9.1 freshly installed
just to be safe. I used the Mach ID Wannabee control panel to change the
machine ID to a Beige G3. Installed from the OS 9.2.1 disk, upgraded to
9.2.2, then I ran the 9.2.2 patcher. *It must all be done before
restarting.* I can't remember whose patcher I used but if it's not still
there, I could send it along to whomever.
Hope it helps,
Seth
