To Eric and all others, I think the desktop rebuild did the trick. I had already run 2 repair programs without success. But somehow in the middle of trashing those preference files and doing the rebuild.....well, all is good again. (and it was so simple, boy, do I feel like the fool) Thanks again to all who helped!
