When should the 250W original power supply be upgraded? I'm nearly ready to move an S900 motherboard to a new ATX case with more fans and perhaps another 80gig IDE disk drive. Currently I have these powered by the original power supply:
orig CD drive orig floppy drive orig 2gig SCSI drive orig case fan 30gig IDE drive 60gig IDE drive 80gig IDE drive CDRW 2 video cards (TT & URez) Sonnett ATA card G3 400MHz card (might replace with G4) The additional 80Gig IDE may go into a striped RAID with one of the current 80gig disks. This system is used for holding a large satellite image database, generating image mosaics and keeping a backup of everything online (the mosaics are up to 1.2 gigs). Is failure of a disk to spin up a warning sign of not enough power? This happened twice soon after adding the 80gig HD and I immediately put the system on an UPS (the HD was OK). I know, it should have already been on one. Since there is not a higher rated UMAX PS available, I know I'll have to make an adapter for using an ATX PS (<http://www.io.com/~trag/Umax_ATX_PS.sea.bin> thanks Jeff W.) or perhaps use two power supplies with fans & HDs separate from the motherboard (see <http://www.mikesmayhem.com/clc/s900.htm>). I'll report back as this progresses. Thanks in advance, Bruce -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
