After many years of fairly trouble-free operation my Pulsar/S900 with Formac G3/400 upgrade is giving me serious pain!
My ATI Rage II video card suddenly stopped video capture some time ago and in trying to get that feature back things have gone from bad to worse. This is a brief history: I tried swapping the video card to a new slot and then I got absolutely nothing - no chime, no sign of life. So back it went to the original slot - still nothing... Panic! I took it to my friendly local Mac guy who after a few days said "Yes it's fixed". I got it back home and sure enough chime, hard disk whirr, everything looking good but where is the screen image? I use a PC monitor with a little converter to let the Mac use it. Having fiddled with the settings (dip switches): no joy. So then I hook up my ancient 14" monitor from my LC475 and then I get two (YES TWO!) desktops which as you can imagine with less than 7" each is almost invisible. I have taken it back to my Mac man and he is befuddled: at one point we were getting no chime went but it was booting up! He's tried zapping PRAM, resetting motherboard, removing all memory and it still comes up with the double desktop! Any help gratefully received... Is it the video card? Can I reset the card by holding keys down at start up? -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
