Hi Perry,

In general, choose the platform that best supports the application software
you wish to run.

OS versions beyond 9.1 are designed to be more compatible with OS X when run
in classic mode. <http://docs.info.apple.com/article2.html?artnum=120030>
They have, for good reason, intentionally been <crippled> such that they
will not boot on a computer whose motherboard predates Apple's G3 series [a
gross generalisation] without hacking the System suitcase, or updating
everything _but_ the "Finder", "System Resources", "Mac OS ROM", and
"System" files. 

IMHO, it's simpler to stay at OS 9.1, selectively updating components, using
preferences to disable undesirable processes such as FBC, VM, Network Time
Server, etc., and adding updates to useful enhancements, such as USB
[including the "HID Library" ;-) ], FireWire, AppleScript, etc., by
extracting them from the update download with TomeViewer.
