  Yep, the 8x that came with my J700 has never booted anything but the 
Umax System disks no matter what fix that worked for some people  was 
tried. I replaced it with a free Apple 8x much better. I was lucky in 
that the C500 came with a 24x CD rom and it would boot some disks 
using the four finger Salute. When I installed OS 9.04 by mistake i 
held down the C key and it booted up! Every OS after that it has 
continued to boot disks with the c key but not with Mac OS 8.x 
Strange but true. I was able to test this as I had OS 8.6 on another 
partition and it was a no go. Will S
