I don't know what the difference is. I *do* know that I finally got 10.2 installed on my S900. It took me pretty much all weekend to do it, but it's running fine. I used XPF 2.2 beta 7. There is a new version available (beta 16) but I haven't tried it yet. My problems were not at all related to XPF. I was having problems burning a bootable 10.2 CD. Anyways, all is well now. The only problem I'm having so far is my external SCSI drive is not showing up on the desktop. It works fine in 10.1.5. It's probably due to it being formatted with FWB 4. It's a Seagate drive that is not supported by Apple Drive Setup. Ryan Rempel reports that 10.2 does not work with 603 and 604 CPUs any longer. It's G3 or G4 only now. So it kinda makes the whole 6400/C600 thing even more pointless.
