Same thing happened with me while trying to install via my internal Pioneer 32x CDROM drive. (I'd gotten rid of the original Matsushita) I was thinking I was SOL but decided to try my old external Yamaha CDR400 scsi burner, it was all I had. Worked like a charm. Follow Will's advice on the black screen of death. There's a lot of voodoo involved in OS X installs on legacy machines. Like, my Pioneer CD drive, it's bootable and light years better than the original Matsushita. Yet I had to use an old 4x8 scsi CDr to successfully install OS X. My original Matsushita probably would have worked too.
