Well, I installed OS 10.2 using XPF b17 today. The install went fine, and now my external SCSI drive is recognized and working! However, my CD/RW is still listed as "Unsupported" by System Profiler, and Classic still does not work.
The CD/RW is an older model (2x2x6!), but it works fine in 10.1.5. The Classic problem I haven't figured out yet. I disabled (but did not remove) the "Classic Support" extensions from the 9.1 folder, but oddly, 10.2 is *not* asking me if it's OK to install the extensions before starting it, the way 10.1.x did. I guess I need to physically remove them. So, I now have 3 installs of OS X on my S900: Old Reliable 10.1.5 where everything works, a flaky 10.2 installed using XPF b7, and a somewhat less flaky 10.2 using XPF b17. 10.1.5 is using Ryan's "Cache Enabler" software for my Sonnet G4/450 card. The 10.2 installs are both using the PowerLogix 1.2 software. OS X itself is extremely stable and fast in all of these installs. The Classic problem is probably due to the presence of 10.1 extensions in the 9.1 folder. The CD/RW problem is more serious, and could just be that Apple has dropped support for such an old drive. Toast 5.1.4 still works with it, however. I plan to swap in my Sony 8x4x24 drive from my Windows XP PC to see if it works. If it does, then I'll get a new drive for the PC, and leave the old one in the S900. But XPF b17 is definitely an improvement!
