Unless you are dealing with a VERY old CD player, 4x is just fine. Plus it only take about 1 min to do a 72min cd. Not bad, and still very compatible. With few exceptions, most newer players made in the last 2 years can handle 8x easily, and almost every player made in the last year is fully compatible with higher speeds, and with CD-RW. Of course, YMMV and each one is different, my 3 year old DVD can't play CD-Rs, period, but my 1991 Pioneer CD Changer works fine with 12x disks and 8X CD-RW. Go figure.
