My response:

I bought one of the OrangeLink USB/FW cards when they first came out. I
installed it in my S900 and it seemed to work fine for a while, but then
if I did any prolonged transfers to my external FW hard drive, it would
stall. A clean install of the OS did little to help. I was recently able
to confirm that it wasn't my hard drive at fault since it works like a
champ on my new G4 933.

I have had no problems with the USB ports, although admittedly the most
data-intensive application I have used it for is downloading pics off of
a 8 MB SmartMedia card via a USB card reader. Ford's comments and your
observations seem similar to my experience. If you have a free slot, I
think the suggestion of a separate card for FW has merit.
