Since I am not too much bothered about getting OS X working just for the sake of it, I am considering giving my S900 (well, Pulsar in Europe) a second life just like I did for my 840AV, by installing Debian GNU/Linux PPC with MOL (running Macintosh applications at native speed). However, this time I would like to exploit the dual processor capabilities of the S900 and use an SMP compiled Linux kernel (2.4)
The hardware ingredients are: 1. a Umax primary processor card 604e/233 2. a Umax primary processor card 604e/200 I am aware of the fact that Umax had a proprietary secondary processor card dedicated to fit in the ASPD slot (secondary CPU slot). However, from my experience with other multiprocessing systems I don't expect much of a difference between the primary and secondary CPU card. Well, the heat sink will definitely be different ; ) Therefore it should be possible to get a primary processor card working in the second CPU slot and I believe it is feasible to give it a try. Unfortunately, I cannot find any tech specs about the original Umax secondary processor card. I only know that the jumper settings on the secondary card differ from the primary card and it seems a small flatcable is bridging the primary and secondary card. I can only guess what the purpose of this cable is. That's all I know so far. I am also aware of the fact that I will have to sacrifice a bit in regards to the cpu/bus ratio because of the difference in clock speed between both processor cards (i.e. 200 and 233MHz) Is there anyone out there who owns an S900DP with a secondary CPU installed? What I would like two know is the jumper settings of this card.how the flat cable is connected (if any) and how the narrow space for a heat sink has been solved. I wonder if someone has tried (successfully?) the same in the past of what I would like to achieve. Any help is much appreciated!
