I have no experience with the Umax power supplies, having my S900 for a
single day. I own three Daystar Genesis MP clones. The OEM power
supply in the Daystar is a Magnetrol unit. It's out of production.
Magnetrol won't return email, phone calls and generally refuses to
acknowledge that they ever made the unit. The Daystar supplies seem to
fail very often and replacments currently cost $385.00. Some have
suggested replacing them with an Apple 9500 supply, but the 9500 lacks
the processor 3.3v harness and the drive connection harness is totally
wrong.

My first Daystar had a fried power supply. I bought a standard ATX 550w
server supply that supported the Athelon MP boards and the dual Intel
P3 boards with the 26 pin ATX connector. The cost was $159.00 and a
couple of hours of my time. I removed an reused the original Daystar
power supply connectors from the fried Magnetrol unit. The only mod
that required any skill beyond crimping a few pins was the construction
of a 74LS04 inverter to allow the ATX supply whose power on line needs
to be pulled low to mate to the Daystar motherboard whose power on line
is taken 5v high.

My point being, there is always a way to hack an ATX supply to fit the
Umax. I noticed the Umax seems to use a AT pin arrangement with an
additional 3.3v connector of AT style. It shouldn't take more than a
few minutes to hack out an adapter for an ATX supply. I'd start out
with a commercial ATX supply to AT board adapter harness. Those are
available at several surplus stores in the DFW area for $2-3. The pins
are available at Fry's, Altex, Mouser or Allied. Used ATX supplies sell
for $5.00 in the Dallas area.

I've noticed that the Umax supplies are currently available on ebay at a
reasonable price, but the supply is sure to dry up in the future.

Sorry if I'm out of line, just some observations on my part.

James
