Being a newbie to this list myself - I will take a stab at this one...

  Make sure there is not a floppy in the machine.  If one of the kids stuck a PC
formatted floppy disk in it, the machine will try to boot from the floppy and
will give you the question mark.

  You can extract an errant diskette by inserting a straightened paperclip in
the tiny hole next to it and pushing.
