That feature of UDF is not >supported on theMac. Theoretically, Mac's can write UDF formatted CDs, but only sequentially. So, the advantage of RW is somewhat blunted on a Mac. You can erase an RW and reuse it, and of course you can write multisession on RW (but you can do that on CDR). You can READ PC written UDF disks (with the right extension) but not change them. I'm not sure what happens reading a PC UDF disk on a Mac if any files have been deleted. The PC folks can format a UDF CDRW disk, and then treat is like a 650MB floppy. However, it is at least as SLOW as floppy. HTH ------------------------------ I tried the old UDF extension and special hack that was discussed on Xcellerate Your Mac several years ago with a Plextor drive, that allowed one with the original Adaptec extension, Direct CD 1.05 for the Mac, no longer available, to rewrite on CDRW disks. I did it on one disk, but then a few weeks ago, firing up the Plextor again after a long intermission, I forgot to shuffle the UDF,Volume extension back from the disabled folder. At least that's what I think happened because after adding a few files I got a "corrupted message" and when I tried to reboot, the computer froze in the middle of a message that promised to fix the error. I threw away the disk before I traced the possible problem to the missing UDF extension so I am not sure if putting it back into the Extension file might have solved the problem. (One could not use Toast if the UDF extension was operative.) Even though CDRW may be slow on the Mac it's irritating not to have it. I fiddle with stories as a writer and I am always making revisions. Take a look at the site which promised that Mount Ranier drives with their software could in fact give true write, rewrite on the Mac and let me know if anyone has had any experience with this. I noted that the Yamahas were Mount Ranier certified, though I haven't seen anything about the latest Plextors. Here is their opening statement of Software Architects who advertised that they could give Mac users on the right drives, Mount Ranier certified, the delete capacity but it's about two years old. I haven't heard much about it lately. http://www.softarch.com/us/press/wcd.html Software Architects, Inc. For Immediate Release October 3, 2000 Mac Users will get "drag & drop" CD Rewritable drive support with release of WriteCD-RW! TM for Mac OS Bothell, WA... Software Architects, Inc. (SAI) announced today it plans to release WriteCD-RW!TM for Apple Mac OS. The software provides everything you need to set up and run a CD Rewritable (CD-RW) drive on a Mac and use it just like high capacity floppy disk. Easy to Use Interface: Unlike conventional CD-RW mastering applications that require several operations to create a "virtual disk" file on the internal hard disk and then slowly write out to disk, WriteCD-RW!'s "desktop" icon behaves just like a hard disk or floppy drive. The user can drag and drop files to write to the disk; point and click to open; drag to the Trash to eject. It's that simple, and it's fast too! Faster Write Speed: CD-RW drives represent a cost effective means of low cost storage. Until now, the trade-off has been slow, and sometimes erratic writing speeds. WriteCD-RW!'s RocketCache TM hard disk cache speeds writes so the user can copy files and quickly get back to work, without having to wait several seconds to several minutes for the file copy to be completed. Files written to WriteCD-RW!'s hard disk cache are written to the CD-RW disk in the background.
