Any of the versions that came just before version 5 are fine, including the
free versions that came with some burners. Toast has been quite good for
quite a while.
Version 5 is better, no doubt about it, but a lot of the improvement is in
the way of a prettier interface. Aqua eye candy and all that. Background
burning is nice too, but not crucial. Realize though, that this comes from a
guy that never used background printing, ever. I'm patient I guess.   =)

PS:
Upgrade to OS 9 and you'll be able to burn a disk without Toast. More
options are always nice.
