Assuming that you have the original Matsushita CDROM drive in your S900 (like most do), it requires a different driver than most of Apple's Install CD's contain. Keeping in mind that booting from a CD involves reading the CD driver off of the CD being booted from. The Matsushita CDROM drive needs Apple CDROM 5.3.1, or Intech CD SpeedTools, or FWB CDRT, etc.. (Apple's 5.3.1 driver was from back in the Mac OS 7.6 days, but works fine on later Systems too) Anything that came after that old 5.3.1 driver, like the one included with OS 8.5, won't work. If you have an external device you can boot from, hard drive, Zip, whatever, boot from that, and (providing a Matsushita compatible CD driver is installed in the System Folder on that device), insert the 8.5 CD and install onto your internal hard drive.
