The CD in the 7100/80 is only 2x, so attempting a 2x copy means that
your data stream has to be nearly "flawless" for the duration of the
burn, even if you have a fairly large cache, I would think. Also, this
is not a fireball machine any more (sorry ... I have one too). My guess
is trying to do burns in the background is out, or even having other
programs running in the background taking precious CPU time. I also
suggest having only the burner hooked to the external SCSI bus when you
do this. It's my understanding that slower devices (scanners and Zip
Drives) on the chain can slow things down. Also, you might want to turn
off VM. Hitting the drive for cache isn't a good thing.

Timing on CD copying can be tricky. My son had a brand new G3/266 with a
CD (24X?) that would spin down during a burn, and not get back up to
speed until the buffer was gone. They had to replace the drive.

Did you have this problem with Toast 4, if you had it? This version
didn't allow a lot of other things to happen during a burn. Version 5
may not be a good choice for a machine of this vintage. There's a lot
that needs to happen, and you don't want things sucking CPU time
unnecessarily.
