Surprising how few SCSI CDROM drives there are on the sites I checked, like
Smalldog, Powermax, David Baucom's Mac Site, OWC, etc.. Poweron has used
and refurb Apple SCSI CDROM drives, but the 24x refurb model is a hundred
bucks. For that price you could get a new 40x Plextor unit from CDrExpress.
But if you want to stick with Apple drivers, perhaps the Apple refurb/used
drives are the best choice after all. I'm not clear on which 3rd party
drives might have Apple ROM's. And I'm also not clear about whether those
that say they have Apple ROM's, actually provide complete compatibility.

I just strolled into a local new&used Mac dealer where I live, and picked up
a Pioneer slot-loading 32x drive. It's been great, even worked for loading
OS X Jaguar on my S900. But under OS 9 I had to use Intech CDST to run it.
It also cost a hundred dollars, but was a new drive.

So, I guess I'm suggesting that you check your local Mac dealers. Most
everything has gone IDE, but perhaps a few stores carry some SCSI models
still. Failing that there's still some good mail-order choices in the
hundred dollar range. I wish MacGurus was back online, they always had some
good advice about these things, and I think had SCSI Plextor CD drives for
sale.
