it will probably work with the proper drivers, however in order for it
to work at its top speed it needs proper drivers for the peripherals
that are hooked up to it. And seeing as Apple has a vested interest in
Firewire as a standard, don't expect them to support USB 2 any time
soon.

it may work - have you tried the Xcelerate Your Mac site on OWC? They
have a large database of what will and won't work with a variety of
configurations.

if you want to run DVD movies on your S900, you could look at getting
Intech's CD/DVD ROM SpeedTools Version 6 for OS 9, as well as getting
a special patch file for DVD Player 2.7 from the OS9 Forever site.
Note, however, that certain DVDs will not work with this setup due to
copy protection schemes that prevent the DVDs from working with 2.7 .
There's also an alternate DVD player program for OS X called vlc, it's
a freeware project. Do be advised that to get the best results with
this you really need a G4, as they don't yet have the info to make use
of graphics card acceleration.
I've played DVDs on my J700 with a Toshiba DVD drive attached to an
ACARD Ahard 66, vlc plays it back with a 400 MHz G3, the video's choppy
but it plays back the audio spot-on. The reason why DVD Player 3.1
won't work is that it has to find a DVD drive on a true IDE bus or
(possibly) via Firewire.
In any case standalone DVD players themselves have gotten so
inexpensive that for the occasional viewing of one it made more sense
to get one of those rather than wanting to view them on my computer's
15" screen. Unless someone wants to give me a Cinema Display and
adaptor :)
