Hey Bolton- So I assume you've soldered in those pci slots? Sounds like 
it went smoothly. I've yet to do mine (on my J700), but a 5port usb 
card is coming my way via ebay and $11.50 (plus shipping).

As far as the scanner goes, you may be able to find an old scsi model 
for real cheap. I'm sure a lot of people are getting rid of their old 
ones as they move to new macs. Vuescan will drive them in OS X, 
otherwise there are drivers available for download that would work. I 
know how it is to be strapped for cash. And now our landlord is selling 
our building...
