Ethernet is better. Don't even consider USB for DSL.

You should be able to find a 10/100mbs Ethernet PCI card for $10 or less. I'm
using a D-Link DFE-530TX+ I got from ebay for $5. I got the driver from this page:
<http://support.dlink.com/downloads/>
IMPORTANT: D-Link also sells a card with the product ID "DFE-530TX" (note the
lack of the "+" at the end). You _must_ get the "+" version of the card in
order to have it work with the Mac - the "DFE-530TX" _does not_ have a Mac
driver and is unusable on a Mac. If you hunt one of these up on ebay, make
sure you query the seller before bidding to ascertain the EXACT card he has
for sale.
You may also be able to find the D-Link card at Staples, OfficeMax,
OfficeDepot, etc.

That said, the DFE-530TX+ works fine on my s900, running either 8.1, 8.6, or 9.2.2.

For a router, I found the Belkin 4-port [wired] router for $20 (after a
mail-in rebate). MacMall currently has it for $40 with a $10 mail-in rebate:

Setup of the router was easy (using a web-page style interface).
TIP: when you first open the router's page, you will find yourself at a "login
screen" requesting a password. I foolishly thought that I _had_ to enter a
password, kept getting nowhere, and finally had to call Belkin tech support
for an answer. Answer: NO password needed, just click the "Login" button and
you're on your way.

Also, you don't need to pay upwards of $20 for Ethernet cabling. Try this
outfit for your cabling needs:

They don't have a web-ordering page, you have to call them. But their prices
still beat most "regular sources" around where I am by a mile, even after
adding in shipping costs.

Hope this helps,
- John
