I just finished (read took me 5 weeks .... lol!!!!) upgrading my C500 603e/180 to run 8.6. The first thing I did was install 144mg Memory, then I put in a 20gig HD. I too was unable to use the original OS disk as I couldn't get it to recognize its own serial number. To work around this I erased the HD totally and installed 8.1 to start with - from there I built up to 8.6, using 8.5, then 8.5.1 along the way. I also purchased a copy of Intech's CD/DVD SpeedTools and HardDisk Tools in order to get my CD ROM to work as FWB ToolKit would not work because of the aforementioned serial number issue. Extensions gave me a terrible time but I seem to have this under control now - only completed by turning on a few at a time, turning the 'puter on and off and seeing what crashed and what didn't, eliminating the ones that caused crashes. I have now finally got a set of extensions that work for me and the programs I have installed which, I might mention, are very heavy on graphics as this is my wife's machine and is what she works with. I could also send you a copy of the list of control panels/extensions etc that I have installed and which are working fine - this might save you some time figuring out what ones work and what ones don't.
