Keith here with my C500 200MHZ running on OS 8.6. 144MB Ram and 2 Gig HD and USB zip drive and SCSI scanner Microtek ScanMaker 2.
1. Please advise what could I upgrade my C500 to do in terms of speed and OS and what kinds of cards etc do I need to do it? I am looking for a good combination of reliability and speed.... absolute speed isn't the goal. I have been given Adobe Go Live 5 to help put up a website but it is incredibly complicated to learn to use and runs real slow on my machine. I think that an upgrade in speed or ??? might help in that regard but you all seem to know so much that is all a mystery to me. I could read this list for 20 years and still never understand 95% of what I read. Other than the speed of Go Live, my machine does everything I seem to need as it sits but you all seem to be doing great things upgrading to higher speeds etc, I wonder if I would really be any better off or if I can do everything I need if I am just more patient or if Claris Home Page is good enough for my modest needs. It runs fast and I seem to be able to understand it. #2. Does anybody have a copy I could buy of one of the third party books that was put out about using Claris Home Page. I have found the program easy to use but I usually find that there are a lot of things I miss. I would like to start putting some of my more important "How to be healthier and avoid doctors and quacks" articles and related material on a website and wonder if it Claris Home Page is really as simple as it looks. Anybody used it or can refer me to somebody who is using it? #3 Would it be possible to use the C500 as a server? I think this may be the kind of question that is either totally laughable or a terrible can of worms. I will never have enough money to buy a new machine to act as a server and my major concern is that no website would ever allow me as much room for storage as I already use on my 2 Gig hard drive and all the articles I have on zip disks. If I could have a server of my own, and I don't know all of what that would entail, I think that would allow me to make my 9500+ files and hundreds of links available so that people could get useful information, proven to work, at no cost except for the downloading time. #4. Several of you have mentioned finding cheap computers and parts at various places. I hope to have $100 - $125 available by the end of February. I don't have enough income in a year to qualify for a credit card or even a small loan, so I have to save up a bit at a time and everything has to be cash. If somebody can find one of our UMAX machines in a store or auction or from a friend that could be used as a server but that you don't need for your own use, could you let me know and if I have enough money I can bid on it or make an offer? I am noticing that my legs are starting to swell up more and more and that isn't a good sign. I think I should start making the arrangements to put this on the web soon. You help and guidance would be very much appreciated. Keith Pendlebury Salmon Arm British Columbia Canada -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
