Hi Nick,
Perhaps the new CDROM has the jumpers set wrong; that will change 
everything. Look at the jumpers on the old CDROM. If it's the same 
brand, the jumpers may have to be set the same way. I wish I could 
point you to a site that shows the jumper configurations but I'm 
looking for something similar too.  In my case, I bought a different 
CDROM than the one I was replacing and the jumpers would not allow 
booting from a system disc. Then I changed the jumpers having only half 
a**ed plan and the system disc boots but gives 5 copies on the desktop. 
Must be the wrong setting. Good luck.
