Nick, This does indeed sound like "The Black Screen of Death" which it 
is if the problem started after trying to load an OSX CD Disk or any 
messing around with OSX in general.
The fix is simple. Turn the machine off, remove the battery and be sure 
to unplug the machine so it has no power going to it. It is common for 
people to miss the last point.
Leave the machine set for a min of 12 min or  longer. Hold the cuda 
switch down for 30 sec plus, Replace the battery . plug in and push the 
cuda for luck one more time. At should now boot into OS 9.x Will S
