That has happened to me a few times last year when performing a
monthly 'tidy' with Norton,TechToolPro and DiskWarrior under OS 8.6. I
was running mirrored boot drives both with diagnostic utilities and a
third larger partition for apps so I could boot from either to 'tidy' the
other two and it worked quite well for a long time with minor mishaps -
usually whilst defragging (optimising/speed disk). If the defragger
hangs, freezes or crashes or fails to complete major damage can be done. I
cured this by making a core system custom boot cd with all the utils
installed and running the monthly 'tidy' from this - it can still happen
though. I ran DiskDoctor on a two gig scsi drive and it totally damaged
it - never spun up again.
To be perfectly safe it is advisable to back up your
settings, preferences and registrations etc before running such utilities.
I learned the hard way to back up my email, remote access
settings, explorer settings,tcp/ip settings and all regs along with work
in progress before attempting a defrag as I would probably struggle to
find hard copy s/n's and passwords for all the s/w and accounts I had. I
have since moved to 9.1 (I tried X but couldn't think of a thing to use
it for) and put the more problematic apps (CodeWarrior, Matlab,
Mathematica and Office) on an 8500 I've built up.
Norton volume recover is the only utility I have used to rescue a
data damaged disk - not with a great deal of success - I backup important
stuff regularly to a non boot drive and less important stuff to cd every
so often - then if I get problems I can just reformat and reinstall -
it's less hassle than rescue.
Sod's Law - if it can go wrong it surely will - when you are least
prepared....
