There has been talking about 256 dimms concerning older macs. 256 MB would give so much more power for older macs that it would mean much more selling elsewhere too: Cards, systems, sofwares, etc... It is nice to know the reason for the lack of 256 dimms.
So I did ask that from OWC / Larry. I think Larry is only happy when I now share the knowledge with the list people. Sorry Jeff, Olli-Matti ---------- Larry answered: The memory controller in the older Macs is not capable of supporting the higher density devices needed to make a 256MB. Also, with the lower density chips made to build a 128MB, there are not enough registers available/supported to double to 256MB either. When these machines were current, 512MB was the specced out max. 1GB isn't too bad...The 12 slot Macs like the 9500 and 9600 are the only ones that can get to the 1.5GB. We'd love to make 256MB a go, but it is a hardware limitation that puts the stop on that. There is no hardware limitation for doing the 128MB. Best Regards, Larry O'Connor Other World Computing, Inc.
