Alan,
Try the "Specials" page at Other World Computing.  One  of the 9.1 install 
CDs they offer has been noted on this list before and I don't recall any 
mention of install problems, despite it being an iMac install disk.  The site 
is explicit in stating wide compatibility with other model G3s and G4s.
