Hi,
I missed your original post, but I will share my experience.
I had similar situation with a HP Laserjet 1100.
I went to www.allosx.com and searched the "Printing" catagory.
I wound up installing Ghostscript 7.05.5 and then Gimp-Print 4.2.2.
I always had printer functions under OS 9.X using a PowerPrint USB
connection.
I now have a totally functional HP LJ1100 in both OSX and OS 9.X.
The above mentioned programs are free and work well as long as you
follow the
instructions. (The PowerPrint USB cable is a pay for hardware item.)
The list of supported printers is quite large.
Remember, you need to install both ESP Ghostscript and Gimp-Print.
Here iare some the links:

*I also posted a rather lengthy explanation of my experience.
It applies to the HP LJ1100, but basically you could substitue
any printer on the list for the HP.
Hope this helps.
