I don't really want to right this message after all the cheerleading
about the ATI card flashing. But I know if I don't even more people
could be affected.
So far no one has been able to flash and use the Sapphire ATI 7000
32mb DDR PCI Video card in a Mac. These are cards bought from
www.allstarshop.com
The sample of people known to try is small 2 people in fact. It isn't
yet known why the card doesn't work. People are working on a fix and
there are leads. In fact this card could be closer related to the Mac
Radeon Edition then it is to the Mac 7000. Which would account for it
not working the rom is wrong for the chips. There are other
possibilities as well. Given the small sampling it could be both people
don't know what they are doing and screwed up. If and when a fix is
found I will let people know. It could be soon ;-)
It is unknown if the Sapphire ATI 7000 32 mb DDR PCI Video card sold at
www.newegg.com is the same model or not. I am expecting to get some
reports soon on this. There also could be other sources for the card
but those are the known US companies. There are also a couple of
Canadian companies known to have the Sapphire 32 mb card but no one has
been known to buy one yet.
The good news well both the ATI PC 7000 32 & 64mb DDR PCI cards flash
and work fine! They are also cheap. The 32mb is $49.00 with a $10.00
rebate through March 31,2003 at CompUSA stores coast to coast in USA.
The 64 mb card apox best price is $69.00 when doing a google web search
and www.newegg.com has it for that price. These are vga port only cards.
Mine has worked for a week on 24/7 no problems once flashed.
The Sapphire ATI 7000 64mb DDR PCI card also flashes and works fine and
has vga,DVI and TV out just like the MAC 7000 card. It isn't known to
be for sell in North America but is available in UK and Europe for apox
$58 USA.
Notice I always List the full name of the card. ATI makes a lot of
different cards many with similar names. Most are AGP slot cards and
many including some PCI cards have SDR ram rather then DDR like the
cards which work. However the ATI 32 card is a very common and easy to
find card. Sorry for this news if you have already ordered a Sapphire
32 mb card. It is still worth trying the card if it's on it's way ,
especially if from a source other then allstarshop.com. The flashing
software saves the PC firmware and lets you restore the card to working
in a PC . I waited all day hoping for good news while people worked on
a fix decided it was time to face the music and warn people. There are
always possible risks when using unknown hardware and doing something
that hasn't been done before. Especially when using what is grey market
hardware like the Sapphire Video cards. German company making clone ATI
video cards likely not licensed to be sold outside the EU. The clone
ATI card market is also very new. The cards do seem to be of high
quality but have some differences that were unexpected. Goodnight/
Good morning Will S
