This is a great CPU upgrade IMHO. In fact XLR8 was the best of the
upgrade companies while they lasted! In fact
http://daystartechnology.com/
are still selling & providing service for them. I'm not so sure there
will be new advances in product. I've only had and used the Carrier Zif
with a G3 not the G4 but I'm sure it also is a good product. I first
used a G3 300mhz which clocked to 350 and ran fine. I've been using the
G3 500mhz clocked to 550mhz for apox 1 1/2 years with no problems.
As long as you can follow directions and get the settings correct I
wouldn't expect you to have any problems once things are setup. In fact
you can set to factory default settings and just pretend your running a
Sonnet CPU upgrade with no clocking abilities ;-) Sorry the devil made
me say that ! I think all of the cpu upgrades are fine and while all of
the companies make a few defective products they all work pretty close
to equally well. The XLR8 gives you the most choices for over clocking,
Powerlogix is in the middle with clocking available but without the
fine tuning of the XLR8 and the Sonnet well lets just say if all you
want is plug and play and your fine with that you'll be happy.
I'm the kind of guy who likes things my way so I really like being able
to play around with the upgrade and get a little more then I paid for.
Some people don't want to be bothered and that is fine that is what
choice is about. When people get a bad cpu upgrade or any product they
tend to trash the brand not realizing it could and does happen with all
companies. The fine tuning abilities of the XLR8 also perhaps make it
easier to screw things up if you don't know what you are doing and or
don't follow directions well. I believe there are both G3&G4 Zifs up to
around 500mhz and less that fit these carrier cards. There are also
hard to find 533 and 550 Zif's that fit the cards. They are harder to
find and also usually more money and only some machines can take
advantage of those speeds. In fact in the UMAX J700/S900 I believe the
G3&4 500mhz Zif runs faster and is a better choice then the 533 or 550
zifs. best of luck Will S
