I was surprised to read this post, as it was the first information that
I had seen that implied that using a Sonnet 700/800 Mhz card in a UMAX
machine and also running OS X might not work at all. After reading this
post, I called Sonnet's technical support department. I asked the man
directly, "Is there a known problem with Sonnet's 700/800 Mhz cards with
UMAX machines?" He put me on hold for a long time, and when he came
back, he said that he was talking to another person at Sonnet about my
problem. (I asked him if is was Neal that he was speaking to, and after
being a bit surprised that I knew one of Sonnet's tech guys by name, he
said no). He told me that most people who had OS X problems had problems
installing it, but he also told me that once Jaguar (or any version of
OS X) has been installed, Sonnet will not provide any support for
problems with actually running OS X. He told me that since the L2 cache
as well as interleaved memory was soldered to the motherboard, that
running OS X on a UMAX machine could be problematic. I wasn't happy to
hear this, but I thanked him for actually telling me this. I suggested
that Sonnet mention this on their website, and he told me that the sales
and marketing people are in charge of the product information on their
website, not the tech people, and he said that most of the problems that
are reported to tech support regarding OS X use are from UMAX owners. I
told him that I'd be posting notes from our conversation online, and I
asked if he'd be willing to give me his name. He said that he didn't
feel comfortable revealing his name.

Now, I have no idea if this is in fact true, but it came from the mouth
of a Sonnet Tech Support person. So at the moment, I'm going to see
what the rest of you can offer for information. I'm not about to
continue buying different types of memory, etc. if it turns out that
getting OS 10.2 to run on my J700 is an impossible task.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Ken
