Well, gang, I finally went ahead and did it. The bookstore at the college I'm attending still has a couple of Quicksilver G4s from a couple of years ago. One had a G4/466 w/10.0.3 and the other had a G4/400 w/ OS 9. I made an offer of $600 for the 400 MHz unit if they would throw in a copy of Jag-wire. The offer was accepted; this is a new, never used unit. So in the next couple of days when the copy of X.2 comes in I'll be swapping files & adding RAM and surfing in X on a G4. I'm eagerly looking forward to the power of X and the software packages now available. I just got tired of dealing with, and realizing, the reality that 9 is the end of the road and the C600 is simply too limited for anything else. The price was right and I can swap around enough peripherals that I won't lose much at all. I'll see how the 400 MHz processor does with Jag-wire but since there is only 64 MB RAM on the new box I'll add a 512 MB stick to make life easier.
So that now brings us to the trusty C600. Keep it as an experimental Linux/BSD box? Or sell? Since I am presently gainfully unemployed and my wife is in similar straits, I think the best idea is to sell. I'll sell the box with the Sonnet G4-400 Mhz upgrade, ATI Rage Pro 8 MB video card, USB 1.1/Firewire card, the original Asante 10BaseT card, an IBM 4 GB SCSI HD, the CacheDoubler module, a Comm Slot II ethernet card, the original software disks and speakers and box. I will have to check if the original Toshiba 3 GB IDE drive is functional--I pulled it in favor of a 40 GB drive some time ago. If functional, I'll re-install it. It does have 144 MB RAM (that's max) so it's a fully functional workstation for a starter internet surfer. I could prep the machine with or without an OS--your choice. I'm not terribly interested in parting out the box to several buyers so I'd like to sell it as a whole unit. Considering that all the add ons will be included, I'd like to ask $200 and buyer would pay shipping. If you have interest, please email me off list. Considering the years I've been on this list and how this list taught me much of what I know about things Macintosh, I'm not bailing out. Will, Jeff, Kennedy, Robyn, and others too numerous to mention have been there when things went bump in the night. Furthermore, this list has been a rare place of civility in an otherwise anarchy filled (and fueled) web. I intend to keep the Umax temp site up until Kennedy is ready to take whatever brain droppings I can provide. This C600 has ben a gas & this list rocks. There's not many peecee users who can make that statement. That's one of the many reasons I choose to use a Mac. -- Pax, Pastor Mac Made on a Macintosh, of course. -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
