Hey there Supermacs list,

Gosh it's been a while since I last posted here, I've been extremely
busy with a huge company project. I just this weekend had some time to
play with my good 'ole C600. I got some new RAM modules that I
installed and I am having a very weird time with them.

I first installed one DIMM and that started up fine and tested without
errors on Gauge Pro's memory test for over 1000 iterations. I then
installed the other module and that started the computer fine and I was
working without errors for about 20-30 minutes.

I then switched to booting off of another boot partition running the
exact same OS version but with a base extension set and got first a bus
error the first time then an addressing error. Okay.... so I removed
the last installed module and tried booting from that same partition.
No error but it just froze booting up. I then tried booting off of a OS
9.0.4 install CD and that froze the same way while booting. So I
started up with extensions off and was able to boot both from the
install CD and the second partition while extensions were off.

I tested a bunch of extensions and it seemed that by disabling the
iomega extension installed by OS 9, I was able to boot. Weird, because
I was always able to boot from that partition with the extension set
unmodified fine before installing that new RAM.

I switched from there back to booting from the first partition that had
no problems booting with either of the new modules installed, and that
booted again fine without any errors. I then, just to further test,
shutdown and installed that last module that wasn't working and tried
booting. Remarkably it booted fine. I then tested it with Gauge Pro and
it failed after 33 passes with the following error:

Memory error @ $02E24D88
Expected $D003FE95 but received $D000FE95

I then let it continue and got another similar error at another memory
address during the 43rd iteration and another after the 55th iteration.
So that told me there was a problem with that second module. I removed
the second module again and tested the first and that tested without
errors but then I removed the first module and tested the second
module. It booted without error and tested in Gauge Pro for over 1000
iterations without errors as well. So I switched that same module to
the other bank and tested it. That too tested without errors.

Then I removed that DIMM and tested the first working module in both
banks. Again, that worked without errors for over 1000 iterations in
Gauge Pro in each bank. I then installed both DIMMS again and was able
to boot but with errors detected early after only a few iterations by
Gauge Pro. Tried again booting from that second partition and got
address error every time.

Quite obviously there is a fault somewhere in the RAM modules as I have
never gotten this sort of behavior before. I left it out in the
description above, but each time I reset the PRAM and also reset the
CUDA switch a couple times in between making changes to the position
and installation of the DIMMs.
I have also removed all PCI cards from the machine as well.

For the life of me I cannot understand why this is happening this way.
Any suggestions?

Regards,

Seth
