Hi All, Last summer I bought some of the "special priced" PRAM batteries that OWC had on their weekly special. My 9600 was in need of a new battery, as well as Ron's son's 8500. Well, they obviously were getting a little old on the shelf at OWC.
I am posting this message, as a sort of warning to others. About five days ago, after not having our 9600 on for a couple of weeks, it would not boot. Or, rather, it booted with no video. I finally got it to boot up after: pulling all the PCI cards except the Twin Turbo, pulling all the RAM except one older stick, disconnecting the SCSI chains from the motherboard, and putting the original processor back in. Then did Jeff W's "finger gymnastics" routine, and it would boot to the blinking icon. (Thanks again Jeff for telling me about Finger Gymnastics!) After a couple of days of slowly putting back PCI cards, testing RAM chips, and the like, I was sure the G3 processor had gone bad. For some reason, whenever I put the Sonnet G3 back in the machine, it would boot with no video. Because I was pushing the CUDA a lot, with all these tests and changes, it was normal to have the clock off. I was all set to return the processor upgrade, which is still under warranty, when I discovered that the clock was off (by about 50 years) every time I turned the machine on. Installed a new PRAM battery earlier today. Life is good. So is the processor upgrade. Sorry about the rambling. Just thought I should pass this on. Alan, you have been having some odd problems with your S900. Have you checked your PRAM battery lately? Nancy -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
