I didn't mention it, but I had tried the C key trick before I tried the
other two combinations, it didn't work either.  On the face of it, Fred's
suggestion about the PRAM battery appears to be a good starting point.  I
removed it and it is dead as a door nail. I am aware that you can't just
reinstall the OS to get rid of all the data.  I have a few drive "wiping"
tricks I was going to employ. Yea, if you have the time and money, "Vee have
vays of making you talk,"  can be done.  I was going for the 99% rule. But,
I've got to get this thing to boot from the CD first. BTW it was my
understanding that a large majority of those, "look what we found on this
drive," articles and warnings were based on cases where somebody just
unplugged a drive and pitched it or sold it. All the "guru" had to do was
plug it up and turn it on.
