1. I started with Apple with an Apple IIe. It served me well for 6
years up through PC's going through 086, 286, 386, and 486. When it was
retired it only had 1 MB of RAM but it could still send e-mail and it
could do graphics and graphs with equal detail to any 486, almost as
fast. As I looked at what I spent for my Apple II and compared it to
friends who upgraded through 486, I spent less for similar performance.

2. I have a Centris 650, it started with an 040 25 hz processor. It
lives on, over 10 years past its original purchase date with a power mac
upgrade card. It runs on OS 8 but it can still run Office 2000 and surf
the net. I have to admit it is slower than my J700 but it only has 80MB
of RAM. Since it came out, PC's have gone through 486 through PV. It
still does what they do although slightly more slowly. But it still
does it. I can't say that about too many 486 machines.

3. I have my UMAX J700 and I still love it. My students who are
running PV's in Windows are amazed that it is as fast as it is and it is
about 5 years old. They do not notice a speed difference between it and
their new machines. In fact some have complained because their new PC's
don't seem to be as fast as my UMAX.

I love Macs because they are

Elegant

Reliable - They have never lost a file (yes I use WinPC's and windows
sometimes mysteriously loses a file that you can't find even when you
search for it). They spend less time in the shop than the WinPC's at
work as well.

Cost effective. They cost less per year of service than a PC and that
includes upgrades. Not only in terms of original dollars spent, but in
terms of service charges and their ability to adapt to OS changes.

Relatively Virus Free - with a world dominated with WinPC's the virus
creators spend less time targeting Macs and it has fewer chinks in its
software for them to play with (according to someone who is in computer
security at the FBI at the national headquarters in Washington DC).

Ecological - when you don't have to buy a new machine every couple of
years, it doesn't have to go to a landfill or a recycling center (the
ones in Europe usually ship to third world countries where they pollute
their land removing the parts).

PC - Yes, I can run Windows too! I can even run DOS for some of my lab
software. It takes up a slot, but I can do it when I have to.
