Since the system folders are drastically different, the machine doesn't
get confused between them. I had 9.2.2 and 10.2.6 on one partition for
classic use, then I had a seperate (500MB) drive that I put 9.2.1 on for
emergency situations. You'll actually see two different system folders on
the one partions, one will have a blue X on the folder icon, and the other
will the orange 9 on it. The patched NVRAM that XPF installs will know
which one to use by key combinations or software settings.

If the machine doesn't have the patched NVRAM, it simply doesn't recognize
the OSX system folder as a valid system folder.
