Will, where did you "hear" this?
I've got an XLR8 ZIF/g3 upgrade in my s900. I see that Powerlogix has lowered
the prices on their 800mhz and 900mhz g3 ZIFs to $199 and $249, respectively.
Do you have any info as to what the jumper settings on the ZIF itself would be?
Thanks, - John
I read about it in the very first review of the upgrade done by Mike @ xlr8yourmac.com
It has been mentioned in passing there a couple of times but no reports of anyone trying it. I have gotten my hands on a chart for the Jumper settings. Since they are made for the Beige G3 & B&W machines Zif setting charts are for 66 & 100 MHz bus machines. So with the chart I have maximum setting would be for 16x which would give us 800 MHZ which is fine but I'd want to overclock and see what I could do with it. The 750 FX cpu is able to run at speeds as high as 20x . So in order to make this worth while I'd need the chart for all the possible settings! There are reports of several machines running this upgrade at 850 & 900 & even 917 MHZ in a Beige G3 machine.
Currant Zifs have dip switches it seems and that is what I have the limited chart for. These are used to set the bus multiplier for the machine which sets the bus speed the cpu will run at. The CPU speed it's self is set in software! So you can over-clock the CPU on the fly! The 750 fx version of the G3 is the first to use software to control the cpu speed.
I am going to write to Powerlogix tonight and see what they have to say. It was the Powerlogix guy who was quoted in the review as saying it should work in a carrier card but they hadn't tested it. They are suppose to have a PCI/ PDS slot(daughter card) version for our machines but the date keeps getting pushed up for months now. I will report on what they have to say. It is perhaps a bit of a long short... I may even be able to come up with $199.00 for this upgrade if I find it will work!
Thanks for the info on the price drop. That is an amazing $100.00 off! . Will S
