Well.. at least the non-toxic, non-salvageable parts.

I have to reflect on my Umax era and it's bittersweet.

What did those of us that bought these NEW actually think we were getting? Let's be real here... the 9600 at the time was upwards of $2000 more. But looking back, maybe it was a case of getting what you pay for.

The issues have been many, granted I've used this machine more than a typical user. Multiple HD's, loaded RAM, G3 upgrade, all PCI slots filled... so I am not whining. The S900 has been good... but it ain't a 9600. And for digital audio... it was a bad choice.

For one... PCI Bridge Clip. I feel like I was sold a bill of goods there. I didn't realize the crippling effect this had until after purchase, and after it was too late.

Power supply. The 9600/300 has a big power supply. And these S900's I feel are taxed beyond spec when you add a G3 upgrade card.... and then add on the add'tl. PCI cards and any extra internal drives.

The RAM issues. Seemed like the canned response to booting issues has always been "Bad Ram". When you see "Bus Error", "Memory Address Error", type 3, type 10, etc. it sure looks suspicious. Things aren't always as they appear. My case... I had all 8 SIMMs tested, 1 was bad... errors continued to persist. First Mac I've ever owned... make that... first computer I've ever been associated with that has EVER had these problems.

Bottomline... and this is no secret... Umax cut corners on these machines. Average user... probably would never notice, but these were not marketed to the iMac crowd. These were 9600 competitors.

Six years is good... funny but I still have a mac plus, Iisi, and 6100 in the basement that boot. Lesson learned and probably never in my wildest dreams would I think I would look back and thank Steve Jobs for killing Umax.
