Installed a Western Digital 80 GB HD in my S 900 #1 machine. Had some problems on first go round when it had been formatted by Speed Tools. Reformatted with Apple Disk Utilities and started again. The drive is connected to a Sonnet ATA 100 PCI card in number 4 slot. My PCI card line up is as follows: #1 Adaptac SCSI card #2 IMX Micro Card #3 Empty #4 Sonnet ATA 100 Dual port Card #5 Empty #6 USB Card
The sonnet card has a CDRW on IDE#2 and the WD is on IDE#1. System profiler shows them on SCSI bus #3. I have no problem booting the machine using the Polaroid CDRW with a bootable CD. I have tried moving the ATA card to #3 slot but that didn't work either. I have two more HD's in the machine. On SCSI bus #0 is a IBM 4.2 GB and a Seagate 18 GB. I have system folders on these and can boot from them by setting the started up disk in Control Panels. When I set it to boot from the WD ATI drive I get the chime and smilely face. My external drive loads its driver. That's as far as it goes. I can return to the IBM HD by praming once on restart. Can anyone tell me what is wrong and is it that you can't boot from a ATI drive? BTW I have done three clean installs with the same result. I could really use some help on this. In the ten years of working with Mac's I am stumped. I previously had a Umax C600 which I never had problems with. That has retired to my closet and am now working with two S 900's. Richie B. Forgot to ask if I should try moving the ATA PCI card to slot #1 and if so where should I put the Adaptac card, which has worked fine in slot #1?
