This might be blasphemy on this forum <grin> but you
could always upgrade the 7500 you mentioned instead.
It's quiet and there may be fewer complications. The
cache is removable. I run a 400 mHz G3 sonnet in mine.
The only problems are that my startup sound doesn't
chime on a cold start and I had trouble with OS X,
which you said you weren't going to do anyway.
