Hi Bob,

To the best of my knowledge, only a qualified Apple branded computer
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583> with built-in
FireWire can be booted as an external FireWire drive, aka Target disk mode,
and only an Apple branded computer with built-in FireWire can be booted from
an external FireWire drive.

Then again, someone here might know of a PCI FireWire card that lets this
happen.

PCI SCSI cards exist that permit booting from SCSI devices, but none that I
know of permit booting the computer into SCSI disk mode, like the
PowerBooks. 

There are PCI IDE class cards that can attach a bootable volume, but none
that I know of that can return the favor.
