My problem is that I can only boot into X from OS 9 or another X by using XPF 3 and designating a helper disk. When I try XPF 2.2.5 or XPF 3 with no helper, the boot keeps flashing "no bootable HFS partition" and eventually boots back into 9. I've tried the ATA card in both slots 2 and 3. It is currently back in slot 3. I thought that the Acard's had no slot or first-8-gigs issues.

pointing this out. However since that posting at least two people on the XPFacto list swear they have the first 8gb issue with an ACARD ATA card. I seem to remember that it was the 133 model but not sure with current track record ;-). I discounted the first person as being mistaken but then a second person reported the issue. Both swear the only way they can get OSX to run is to follow the first 8 GB rule. So worth trying even though it's not a widely reported issue. I've no idea why only some people have the issue.

What about using classic for the helper drive as I do? You didn't mention if you've tried this or not? I use it for booting OSX utilities CD's in XPFacto 3.0 . Best of luck. Will S

Thanks for the responses, Will. From what I've observed, it looks like this SIIG Ultra ATA 133/100 Pro model (ACARD) card has no slot issues, but does have the first 8 GB rule (for booting). If that's the case, maybe I can still get what I want using XPF 3.

Several responders on the XPF forum affirmed that they had never had any 8 GB issues with the SIIG card. One suggested that I initialize my Maxtor with Drive Setup. That turned out to do the trick. I had initialized with OS X's Drive Utility. After many long hours of backup, Drive Setup init, restore, various utilities, I am back up and able to boot to X through XPF 3 with no helper disk.

*If* you use OS 9's Drive Setup to initialize the ATA HD, it appears that the SIIG ATA/133 card has neither slot nor 8 gig issues.
