I suppose the '6-32' info is still very helpful info because I don't like to
spend the time figuring out screw sizes. The proper length would be the easy
part for most folks.
I have some extra drive mounting screws bought from a PC store but have no idea
what sizes they are except they fit the threaded mounting holes in drives.
Walked in the store and asked for drive mounting screws and that was about it.

Absolutely. The screw diameter and pitch is the important and the difficult thing. Once you've got that, a bag of six (or eight?) screws at Home Depot is less than $1. Most folks can afford to take home the 1", 1.25", 1.5" and 2" and try them. That's still less than $5.
