I do have a router...I have a *gasp* PC that has had a USB dsl modem for quite some time. Recently, I upgraded to an ethernet modem, bought the router and prepared to be a happy camper. Except I can't get the connection made.

What connection?

mac --> router connect via ethernet/dhcp in tcp/ip control panel
router --> modem --> provider tell router your PPOE user/password combo

note: some service providers may track the MAC address (a hardware ethernet identifier) of the first device you use to setup the service - or, more likely want you to run their crappy PPPOE software on initial setup to get your user/password setup. I assume you have already setup the service with your *gasp* PC, and thus should know your PPOE login/password. You should be able to give this info to your router (If it's capable of PPOE), and unless your provider tracks the MAC address of the registering device, it should work. Power cycling the modem before connecting it to the router can also help it forget the previous device connected to it.

When I called my ISP to find out what I was missing (as
in, how in the heck to set the thing up), I found out that I need something that's not available in OS 8.5.

If it's the connection from the router to the service provider, then indeed the OS on the computer would have an effect......

(And it's been a bit since I called so I don't remember exactly what that was!) I had a big work project so I didn't worry about it...but now that I'm back to it, it's a land of confusion. There seems to be version 9 for iMac, version 9 for B/W G3 and above, version 9 that works for all...and it appears from my search that 9.2 will not work with my system at all. (I have an S900 with G3 upgrade, 198 RAM.) Anyway, I really hoped that it would be as simple as plugging in a cord, but alas! that's not the case. Thanks for the thought. Sigh.

A simple generic OS9 cd should work on installing on your s900, and it can be upgraded with free downloads from apple to 9.1. If you use software from http://www.os9forever.com you can then upgrade to a modified 9.2.2. With software from owc's website, you can even install OSX (ask Will, he's our local X fanatic). IIRC, everything beyond 8.5 is unsupported on our machines.
