Umax clones should all supply termination power to the bus:
<http://www.lowendmac.com/tech/termination.shtml>
Seagate recommends that you set termination power to "From the Bus" for all
your SCSI devices.
<http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/install_mac.html>
You don't want your devices supplying termination power "to the bus". When
I say that you need to turn off termination power, what I mean is that you
should set your hard drive and CD-ROM so that they are not supplying
termination power to the bus. Try using Google to locate your CD-ROM's and
your hard drive's configuration page that describes what all the jumpers on
your hard disk do in detail.

Parity is error checking for your SCSI bus, and I strongly recommend that
you enable it on all your devices. It should be enabled by default on
everything, so no jumper changes are usually required. I'm not quite sure
what sector size on a CD-ROM does, but on hard drives it's fairly important
to have 512 byte sectors before most computers can read/write/format them.
Try that one in both positions, it may be your problem.

When you're making boot floppies, ensure that you have the correct System
Enabler in the System Folder of the disk. Often times you won't be able to
get any Power Macintosh to boot under 7.x without the appropriate enabler.
Since both the S900 and the J700 use the Storm Surge motherboard, based from
the PM 9500, I suggest using Google to locate the right System Enabler for a
Power Macintosh 9500 and using that one.
