the computer saw it, but said it was "unsupported."  I suspect that this is
because, if I understand this correctly, this hard drive has no internal
termination, but rather, relies on termination from the controller/motherboard.

If you're using the copy of Apple HD SC Setup included in the System 7.5.3 Disk
Tools, then it will refuse to work on any drive that isn't Apple-branded.
You're not SOL yet though.

Verify that your copy of Apple HD SC Setup is version 7.35
Download this patch:

35-patch.hqx
If you don't have a copy of Apple HD SC Setup version 7.35, you can get one
here:

That ought to fix the whole unsupported business.
