My sound just quit on my s900.
I have done nothing to my machine for a while, it just quit in the middle of a game. System 8.6, xcelerate 400 Mz G3, Voodoo 3300 card, 600+ megs of ram. ATA 100 card, but the boot drive is a 4.3 scsi, USB card, TV Card. It just quit for no reason.
It seems unlikely, but check that the cable from the sound jack (Venus board) to the motherboard is connected. It's a little straight six pin connection at the front middle of the motherboard in amongst all the other pin headers. It may be labeled "Audio" and it is next to the microphone connector. The labeling is on the motherboard.
Also, check that the cable to the internal speaker (four pins, two wires) is still connected, assuming you are using the internal speaker for sound, and not external speakers.
If the audio front sound jack connector comes loose, then the computer thinks that there is a speaker plugged into the front jack and it disables the speaker and the rear jack.
Also, try plugging speakers into the front jack and if that doesn't work, into the rear jack.
